Epsom, Sutton and St Helier hospitals are to benefit from almost £9m spent improving the sites.

The £8.9million from Epsom and St Helier University Hospitals NHS Trust's capital development programme will be used to refurbish wards, clinics and other patient areas as well as upgrading computer systems.

Money will also be spent improving the infrastructure to ensure they remain safe environments for patients, visitors and staff.

Nick Gorvett, director of corporate infrastructure at the trust, said: "We are delighted to unveil our new £8.9 million development plan and know that all our patients, visitors, staff and volunteers will soon benefit from the improvements.

"Keeping our hospitals running smoothly 24 hours-a-day, seven days a week is no small task - and this new investment highlights that.

"In fact, this cash boost means that we will spend nearly £25,000 every single day over the next year on upgrading our hospitals and equipment.

"We are absolutely committed to providing each and every one of our patients with a high level of care, and making sure that our hospitals are clean, safe and stocked with all of the latest equipment."

An additional £17.5 million, funded directly by the Department of Health, will be spent on improving St Helier.

This will include £12million on getting the hospital ready for its £219million re-development and £5.5million on expanding the hospital’s urgent care centre.
