Epsom Bowling Club had it's open day last Sunday.

The event had a touch of prestige thanks to special guest the Mayor of Epsom and Ewell, Councillor Neil Dallen and the Mayoress Mrs Ann Dallen.

Both husband and wife tried their hand at bowling and were served tea in the gazebo, with a good view of activity on the green.

Member Keith Roberts was at the open day and has been playing with the club for five years.

He said: "I was coming up to retirement and basically I joined to keep fit.

"The camaraderie of the club as well - as you get older older there's different sports you can do, and as you get older different bits fall off and you slow up."

However, the sport is not just for active older people.

"The top bowlers are in their 30s, bowls goes right through the ages," said Mr Roberts.

If people thought bowls were easy, Mr Roberts said "you'd definitely ask them to come down, because it looks easy but there's a lot more it.

"You start off playing friendlies with other clubs, then you can get in the league team.

"It goes right up to international."

After the event, the Mayor and Mayoress were given flowers and the 'history of the club', and assured once their busy year was over they'd both be welcome as bowling members.
