Conscientious Year 6 pupils gave up their Saturday bagging shopping in Banstead Waitrose for charity.

The students of Woodmansterne School, in Carshalton Road, Banstead, made a sterling effort and ended up raising £413.53 for Alzheimer’s Society on March 10.

This takes the total raised for the charity this academic year to £1,221.08, raised from two further events – a Silly Sock Day and an Elf Day – both held back in the Autumn Term.

The Alzheimer’s Society is the school’s chosen ‘charity of the year’.

Head Teacher, Clare Goldsmith, said: “We are incredibly proud of our Year 6 pupils, who demonstrated one of our school values ‘responsibility’ so well.

“We received lots of lovely comments from shoppers on their manners and how articulate and well-behaved they were”.

There were two sessions of bag packing of two hours each and the volunteers chose which session they wanted to attend.

A member of staff from the school accompanied the pupils at both sessions.

Jess Hillicks, Alzheimer’s Society community fundraiser for Surrey and West Sussex, said: “It’s fantastic what they’ve been doing for the Alzheimer’s Society.

“Dementia can happen to anyone and there is currently no cure.

“We rely on fundraising from schools like Woodmansterne to continue doing our vital work.”
