In news that will make your shins ache just from reading it, a marathon-runner ran five marathons in five days, powered by school meals.

Epsom Primary & Nursery School was a worthy choice for the National School Meals Week challenge, having their own pre-school breakfast club and after school club with home-cooked meals.

The school on Pound Lane was the only school asked to be the south east Region food-stop and was supported by Surrey County Council Catering Services.

Runner Karen Robinson, 44, has competed in the London Marathon a staggering 15 times and as a team member of the Lead Association for Catering in Education the cause is close to her heart.

She said: "School meals nowadays are excellent, cooked by passionate staff with quality ingredients. I love running so I decided to run around the country, running 5 marathons in 5 days to promote healthy eating to as many school children as possible."

Karen spilt her daily running into two half marathons per day and Epsom Primary and Nursery School was her first stop on day two, November 14.

Karen spent time in the playground exercising with the children who attend the Epsom Primary School Breakfast Club.

After that she went inside to enjoy a tasty meal, cooked by the onsite team from Surrey County Council Catering Team who cook for over 400 Epsom Primary School pupils every day.

One pupil said: "I love school dinners and I love PE so it was great to see Karen and Mrs Smith (Head Teacher) running into school this morning. Eating and living healthy is so important, but I am not sure I could run as far as Karen!”
