A school in Epsom has hosted the UK's biggest inter-school challenge where a multiple European mountain bike champion was a special guest.

Warren Mead Junior School (WMJS) in Epsom hosted the Extreme Mountain Bike show that is organised by transport charity Sustrans last Friday (July 14)

The school has a successful track record with cycling and finished ahead of all Surrey schools in the Big Pedal in March.

They ended the two-week race in third nationally in front of 1,689 other schools.

Multiple British and European mountain biking champion, Danny Butler, performed stunts at the school last Friday.

He was also there to launch the school’s new mountain bike obstacle course.

Head teacher, Ms Cunningham, said: “I feel that WMJS have gone from strength to strength with cycling. I’m so proud of all we have achieved and it is all down to our fab cycle champions. To have come first in Surrey is a great achievement of which I know we are very proud, but to be first across the South East is even more incredible, let alone 3rd nationally.

She added: “Cycle clubs throughout the year alongside opportunities to cycle at lunch break and a variety of activities maintains the momentum and status of cycling, plus it encourages children to cycle to school regularly, not just for The Big Pedal. This is a life skill and we maintain 100% record of having our champions ensure all children learn to ride.”

The school has been encouraging children, staff and parents to cycle to school as part of a programme that is funded by the Reigate & Banstead District Council parking department.

Following Friday’s event, a family bike ride to the downs and horse track was held.
