More than 2,000 children in 286 teams from 11 districts and boroughs competed in the Olympic-style Surrey Youth Games this weekend.

Epsom and Ewell finished runners-up to defending champions Woking, and despite being the smallest borough in the county, fielded the highest number of teams.

More than 200 youngsters from the borough took part in 15 different sports, winning medals in 13 disciplines – including golds in rugby seniors and table tennis juniors.

Alice Pendry-Humm, a judoka (one who practices judo), took home the gold in the junior girls event.

Romain Chauvin also won an award for the most ippons and fastest ippon, at just three seconds – an ippon being the highest score a judoka can achieve in the sport.

A record 560 young people aged between seven and 16 had registered to take part in free trials and coaching sessions organised by Epsom and Ewell Borough Council over the last three months, before being whittled down to a team of 222.

Team Epsom and Ewell edged out Spelthorne in third place and Elmbridge and Reigate and Banstead in joint fourth. Team Mole Valley tied for seventh place with Surrey Heath in the final standings.
