PCSO taking on cancer

A police community support officer who has raised more than £10,000 for charity is preparing to undertake her latest challenge - a four day trek along Hadrian's Wall.

North Walton PCSO Claire Woods will take part in the challenging trek from June 6 to 9 to raise money for the Royal Marsden Cancer Campaign.

In November, PCSO Woods completed a nine-day cycle through Vietnam, getting back on her bike for the first time in 13 years following a near fatal accident.

Along with two treks in China and Iceland the previous year, she has raised more than £10,000 for the charity.

The Royal Marsden is close to PCSO Woods' heart after it helped her partner and a number of friends who have suffered from cancer.

She said: "I lost my partner to cancer on February 1 this year so on behalf of him and many others my fundraising continues in the hope that this disease can be conquered.

"All challenges are worth the effort, with some of course harder and longer than others! The charity work goes hand in hand with my role as a PCSO - it's all about doing something which can help make a difference to the lives of others.

"My job also helps to get me ready for the challenge - I'm in training for the trek everyday in my role as a PCSO, which involves being out on the beat patrolling in my neighbourhood for large amounts of time."

To sponsor PCSO Woods residents can go along to the next North Walton neighbourhood panel meeting on May 22 at Grovelands School, in Sandy Lane, Walton, at 7.30pm.
