Samples of the deadly H5N1 strain of bird flu are being tested in Weybridge, but officials have assured the public they are safe.
Following the latest outbreak of bird flu in Suffolk, samples from culled animals are being transported to the Veterinary Laboratories Agency building in Weybridge.
But the Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) has played down fears of a leak like that seen with foot and mouth disease in Pirbright, Surrey.
A spokesperson for Defra said: "The birds on the infected premises are being culled on the site under strict biosecurity conditions, and samples from them are then taken to the Veterinary Laboratories Agency in Weybridge.
"The carcasses will be transported in securely covered, leakproof vehicles and each load will be escorted at all times."
