Persistent antisocial behaviour in Walton town centre has led to Elmbridge Council putting a Public Spaces Protection Order (PSPO) on the area.

A PSPO, often described as a geographic ABSO, criminalises behaviour that is not normally criminalised, such as stopping drinking alcohol or using drugs, or not leaving an area, when told to by an “authorised person”.

Since the beginning of 2017, Surrey Police has had “numerous” reports of antisocial behaviour in the area, and has had evidence of substance misuse, underage drinking and sexual activity when groups have gathered.

The force said this has led to assaults, criminal damage and racially motivated crime.

Surrey Police Inspector Sarah Milligan says; “For some time now we have been receiving reports of unreasonable and persistent anti-social behaviour in Walton which is having or likely to have a detrimental effect on those living in the town.

“The PSPO will enable us to enforce behaviour that is not welcome in the town and ensure it’s a peaceful place for those who live and work there. We will be working closely with Elmbridge and our partners to ensure the order is effective.”

The order will run until March 1, 2019.
