To honour the memory of a Claygate man, his family and friends unveiled a specially commissioned bench outside his local pub.

Created by chainsaw artist and wood carver Ella Fielding, it was commissioned to celebrate the life of Tommy Mills, who died suddenly last August, aged 79.

The bench is adorned with boxing gloves – a reference to the Foley Boxing Club, which Mr Mills helped set up in 1971 to give young kids something to do.

Mr Mills’s oldest grandchild David and youngest Karys were at The Griffin for the unveiling on Saturday, July 22, organised by lifelong family friend Diane Smith.

The inscription reads ‘For Tommy Mills – A Claygate character 1.4.1937 – 12.8.2016’.
