Conservative councillor Peter Geiringer was forced to cough up £10 after he lost a bet that the Cheam Leisure Centre would close before the elections.
Councillor Geiringer made the bet with Liberal Democrat councillor Graham Tope over a year ago. He said: “I didn't think Graham Tope would want to publicly lose the bet so it seemed like a cheap insurance policy.”
The bet was paid off at this month's full council meeting. Councillor Geiringer said:“I thought I would pay it off in euros since the Liberal Democrats are so in favour of Europe and the Euro.”
Councillor Tope was offered the chance to double his money with a £20 bet to keep the leisure centre open for another four years – he respectfully declined.
