Pensioner sets 18 powerlifting world records

A POWERLIFTING pensioner has set 18 new world records.

Gavin Walker, who is 73, set new British, European and world records for his age range in the squat and deadlift categories at the British Single Lift Championships, held in Stafford on Sunday, March 3.

Mr Walker, of Newton Hall, Durham, now hopes to be chosen to represent Britain at the World Single Lift Championships in Antwerp, Belgium, in June.

The great-grandfather and former Consett steelworker has travelled extensively to compete in powerlifting since taking up the sport more than 40 years ago.

He won the senior award for remarkable achievement at The Northern Echo’s Local Heroes Awards in 2009.
