A man who has dedicated the past 15 years of his life to taking care of those in need has been honoured for his efforts.

A governor at St Giles School in South Croydon, Kenneth Morcombe was among those recently named in the queen’s birthday honours list for his work with children with special educational needs and disabilities.

Mr Morcombe has overseen huge changes at St Giles over the last 15 years with the intake of children with profound learning difficulties, the appointment of two head teachers and building works to remodel the school to meet the changing needs of the children.

As a result of his support for the changing, more complex, profile of the school, St Giles was awarded Croydon Special school of the Year by the council in November 2016.

A statement issued by the school thanked him for all of his hard work.

"Ken has gone over and beyond ordinary governor and volunteer work at St Giles," it read.

"He is a tireless campaigner for our children and for children with very special needs in Croydon.

"As a school we are delighted that he has received this well deserved honour."
