A Coulsdon re-school has reason to celebrate after being rated 'outstanding' by Ofsted.

This was music to the ears of Butterflies Pre-School's team leader Jennifer Utting who said the staff were "chuffed" after hearing the news.

"I put it down to having a great team," she said.

"We've gone to town with our strategies and everyone has really focused on being on the same page when it comes to teaching the kids."

In the report by the Government schools watchdog, it said the ability of kids to help others was a big reason for the rating.

"Children are extremely confident, self-assured and highly motivated to learn," the report said.

"They make individual choices in their play and continually extend their own learning.

"Their behaviour is exemplary as they work collaboratively together, sharing their thoughts and ideas.

"Older children take great pride in helping those who are younger to follow routines."

With 40 kids enrolled at the school, things can get quite busy at times.

But when it came to managing special needs kids, once again Ofsted could find no fault.

"Support for children who have special educational needs and/or disabilities is exceptional," the report said.

"Staff demonstrate a strong commitment to working with external agencies.

"The identification and implementation of targeted support enables all children to excel."

This was exactly what Ms Utting hoped to hear.

"We always make sure every child is catered for," she said.

"If a child does come into our care we try to identify quickly if they do have any special needs.

"After that we investigate and see if we can help them develop."

It had been three years between inspections at the school, with 2015's instalment garnering a 'good rating'.

Ms Utting said the staff had no plans to lose their outstanding status.

"We have just installed a big piece of Astro-Turf in the outdoor area and we aren't going to rest on laurels," she said.

"We've always enjoyed our work and the aim now is to keep the standard."
