The owner of a South Norwood newsagent fears she might be forced to shut up shop because Transport for London have revoked her ability to sell Oyster cards.

Gordons & Tina's Newsagency & General Store in Carmichael Road has served its community for 34 years.

But following a decision by the Oystercard Sales Service to terminate its contract and bar the shop from selling the cards, the store's future has been put in jeopardy.

The newsagent's owner, Tina Patel, has run the store by herself for the past eight years following her husband's death and was horrified to hear of the decision.

"I felt like I had a heart attack," she said.

"I have been a loyal customer, first of all selling bus passes and in the past few years Oystercard services, for over 30 years.

"They don’t care about us, we are nothing to them.

"The ability of customers to top up their Oyster cards in my shop is the lifeblood of my business and I worry that without this my regular customers will go elsewhere.

"I may have to close the shop for good if sales continue at this level."

The reason TfL has taken away these services has to do with a few direct debit failure's on Mrs Patel's end. Although this is something she puts down to an error with the bank.

A TfL spokesperson said: “Unfortunately after a number of incidents of direct debit failures in recent years, we have reluctantly had to terminate this Oyster Ticket Stop contract.”

Vivienne Connell has shopped at the store for more than 20 years and believes it is "integral to the community."

"For the past 22 years my family and I have accessed all o these, including buying bus passes/travelcard, which has been most convenient.

"And now with he proposal to close the ticket office at Norwood Junction station, this is needed more than ever.

"TfL should be more customer-focussed on the decisions they make such as that in this instance and it would be beyond a loss if this service is not restored."
