Supermarket Aldi is set to open in Streatham on Thursday, January 18.

Spanning over 1,400 sqm, the large store, located in Streatham High Road, will have 91 car parking bays.

Former Team GB hockey player Helen Richardson-Walsh, who is opening the new branch, will be handing out tokens to the first 30 customers in the queue, which will be exchanged for a free bag of Aldi’s famous Super 6 fruit and vegetables.

Following the ribbon cutting, Ms Richardson-Walsh, who won gold at Rio 2016 as part of the women’s hockey team, will also make an appearance at St Andrews Catholic Primary School, giving an assembly on healthy eating and the importance of cooking with fresh vegetables.

She said: “Aldi has been so supportive in the run up to Rio, from providing me with vouchers for fresh fruit and vegetables which help me power through my training sessions, to the opportunity to be involved in great events like opening new Aldi stores, where I’m able to meet members of the community.

“I’m really looking forward to meeting the pupils of St Andrews Catholic Primary School and talking to them about how I maintained my fitness levels as an Olympic athlete.

“I now teach hockey and cricket at a local primary school so as a teacher, I know how important a healthy, balanced diet is to support the children’s learning.

“I hope to inspire the children of St Andrews to get into the kitchen with their parents and help to cook nutritious meals from scratch.”

The store has brought with it 40 new jobs and is still recruiting for a variety of roles in the area, from store assistants to assistant store managers.

Information and applications on all roles at Aldi can be found via www.aldirecruitment.co.uk/stores.

Store manager Gregory Onobrauche said: “We have a fantastic team here in Streatham, which is as passionate about delivering great customer service as it is for the quality of Aldi’s products, so we can’t wait for the local community to see what we have to offer.

“We’re looking forward to meeting Helen and we hope our customers and pupils of St Andrews Catholic Primary School really enjoy finding out more about her successes and healthy eating regime. How often do you get to meet a sporting hero and hold a real gold medal?”

The store, located at 350 Streatham High Road, will be open from 8am to 10pm from Monday to Saturday and 10am to 4pm on Sunday.
