A sheep has had its throat ripped out in a vicious dog attack.

The sheep was killed last week when it was grazing at Happy Valley in Old Coulsdon.

The incident is believed to have happened sometime between midday on Tuesday, August 8 and 2pm on Wednesday August 9.

A spokesperson for the company looking after the sheep - Downlands Partnership - said: "The sheep had its throat ripped out and the rest of the flock worried, which could lead to further health problems due to stress in the near future.

"The flock has been removed and will need to be monitored closely over the coming weeks."

Workers at the valley have been left appalled by the attack.

"Local residents love this beautiful area and its rare chalk grassland habitat, which the sheep once created and now help to manage for biodiversity," the spokesperson said.

"The sheep are gentle and inquisitive creatures and the Downlands Partnership local volunteer stock checkers that help the staff to look after them, have been left appalled by this incident."

Signage is posted around the valley and paddock to warn the public of the potential dangers of dogs near sheep.

The paddock also has a dog control order that prohibits dogs off the lead.
