Army officers made a special visit to St George’s Hospital last week to thank a nurse for spending three months helping the wounded in Afghanistan.

Emma O’Reilly, who works in Cardiac Intensive Care, returned from Helmand Province in January after a gruelling three months working at the British military hospital in Camp Bastion.

Her commanding officer, Colonel Gerry McBride, presented St George’s with a print depicting a returning soldier called “safe return” to express his thanks.

Ms O’Reilly said: “It was a real eye-opener, and it has benefited my practice at St George’s. I was in a lot of situations that I wouldn’t usually encounter. I’d consider going again.”
