The mastermind behind a website to draw communities together is taking part in a week-long peace festival in Streatham next month.

Dan Thompson, whose website went live last week, will speak during the Little Big Peace Event.

In the aftermath of last year’s riots Mr Thompson used Twitter hashtag #riotcleanup to mobilise thousands of people to help clean up across London.

Inspired by that effort, he decided to link Twitter to online pages that people can use to start community action.

He said: “It’s all about getting people to stand up and do things for themselves.”

Both the website and the Little Big Peace Event rely on the same sense of community spirit.

Event founder Mel Larsen said: “Peace starts with individual communities and we want Streatham to be a town known for its peace and positivity.

“The Little Big Peace Event and our fantastic programme of speakers, films, music and more, we hope to inspire the local community.

“We’re thrilled that the people of Streatham have really got behind it and we can’t wait to welcome everyone to our events in September.”

The event also includes a lantern procession, knitting a peace scarf, choral singing, yoga and a celebrity football match.

The festival, from September 17 to 23, was inspired by the Peace One Day campaign, which calls for a global ceasefire on September 21.
