A teenager from Wallington is taking part in an annual fundraising walk for Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY).

Ryan Butters, 16, became involved with CRY when he collapsed whilst running in athletics two years ago, aged only 14.

He was diagnosed with a rare heart condition and had to undergo a number of major operations including open heart bypass surgery. Now he is taking part in the walk to raise awareness of Young Sudden Cardiac Death and promote the charity on Sunday, July 15.

Chief executive and founder of the charity, Alison Cox MBE, said: “This event always holds a very special place in our annual calendar at CRY as it brings together so many families from across the UK who have all been affected by the devastating conditions that can cause young sudden cardiac death.

“We’re so grateful to Ryan for joining us on the 15th and for helping us to generate funds and vital awareness about the importance of cardiac screening and putting a stop to these often preventable deaths.”
