Lambeth’s street and indoor markets will be celebrated during Love Your Local Market fortnight, which started on Saturday.

To mark the national campaign, which aims to promote markets and their importance to the local economy, Lambeth Council has waived pitch charges for all Lambeth registered casual traders on National Market Day (today) and pitch fees for registered permanent traders for one week.

It is also offering trader workshops for people who are considering taking up street trading.

And on Sunday, Herne Hill will have a new community led market on Railton Road, which will sell locally sourced produce and crafts to local residents and visitors.

There are eight different markets in Lambeth - including Brixton Farmers’ Market, Brixton Indoor Market, Clapham Farmers’ Market and Clapham’s Venn Street Market – which offer a variety of food, clothes, books, organic goods and arts and crafts.

Councillor Pete Robbins, cabinet member for neighbourhood services, said: “Street markets are a vital part of London life. People want markets that offer something a bit different from the normal products found in the supermarkets.

“The Venn Street scheme has been a fantastic success story, providing a permanent home for the market and giving the area a real buzz.

“The revival of Brixton Market has been another success story, creating jobs and attracting shoppers to the area. Markets help support the local economy and make our town centres more attractive.”
