A dig for Roman remains could buy time for a business that will be forced to move premises because of the Morrisons bid in Weybridge.

Accountants firm Ward Williams is currently based in the office building next to the former Focus DIY in Monument Hill.

The superstore Morrisons, which recently held a public consultation regarding its plans to build on the Focus site, has requested the firm vacate the building.

But, because the building is within an area of high archaeological potential, the council has demanded a survey and dig at the site.

Ward Williams partner Malcolm McKinnell said: "We’ve had noisy diggers and holes in the car park, but they haven’t found anything yet.

"It’s very interesting, but will also work out well for us if they find anything because it will delay things.

"We want to stay where we are because we’ve been here four years and it’s a nice building.

"It’s hard to find new offices and then there’s the cost of upheaval.

"We’ve got until September to be out, so any delay will be good."

Mr McKinnell said there was a good chance road of finding something because maps indicated a Roman road ran through Weybridge.

Remains have been found previously in Brooklands and St George's Hill.

Mr McKinnell said: "It would be fascinating if they found something, not just for us, but for the whole area."

A spokesman for Elmbridge Council confirmed the site was an area of high archaeological potential.
