A fundrasing campaign has been launched for a baby diagnosed with cancer just weeks after suffering brain damage during birth.

Evelyn (Evie) Shears, born to Aimey, 31, and James Shears, 32, from St Helier, on January 18, 2012, will need support for the rest of her life.

After an incredibly distressing birth, Evie was diagnosed with cerebral palsy, which causes speech and movement difficulties.

Just weeks later, the family received another blow and Evie was diagnosed with cancer of the eyes, or retinoblastoma.

As a result Evie has been undergoing vigorous chemotherapy at Great Ormond Street Hospital to try and shrink the tumours to save some of her sight.

Now, the family have set up a website to generate support for Evie and her family and to inform people of her progress.

Mr Shears said: "The main reasons we are fundraising is for nurses, physiotherapy and medical equipment.

"We don’t know if she will ever gain full use of her senses.

"We are looking for help and support for all her specialist need.

"Once chemo finishes we will start on her development."

Baby Evie is currently tube fed and has spent the last three weeks at the Chase Hospice in Guildford.

Learning basic life skills such as controlled movement will be a huge challenge for Evie and she will need specialist support in the future.

Mr Shears said the NHS only provide a basic wheelchair but Evie will need a specialist one for which they will be raising money.

He said their friends have all been amazing and Mrs Shears’ mother who lives in Loughton in Essex has been helping to fundraise.

Friends of the family have also set up a charity football fundraiser on June 16 in Raynes Park at 12pm.

There will be a football auction, BBQ, raffle and much more to raise money for Evie.
