It’s not every day you get the chance to meet a former England footballer.

But for one West Norwood community group the dream came true when ex-striker Tony Cottee joined them to open a new outdoor gym.

The Sky Sports pundit, who played for West Ham and was capped seven times for England, officially unveiled the gym in Salters Hill on behalf of the Friends of Norwood Park.

The gym, which includes exercise equipment, basketball and table tennis, was completed in February following the group’s successful bid for £44,000 from the charity initiative Community Spaces.

It has already been a “massive hit” with residents, the group said, adding it hoped more people would use it to improve their fitness.

A spokesperson said: “When the weather is good it is unbelievable how many people, especially school children, are using the equipment.

“We believe the gym will be a great facility for all park users. It will also enhance existing facilities in the park and what’s great about it is that it is free to use.”
