Formula One World Champion Damon Hill OBE set off for France on two wheels, not four, at the start of a gruelling charity bike ride on Friday.

The 40 cyclists set off from Putney after being treated to a send-off breakfast from Wandsworth-based pub group Young's whose staff are taking part in the ride.

From Putney they pedalled to Newhaven to catch the ferry to Dieppe, before cycling onwards to Pegasus bridge in Caen - the scene of one of World War II's most iconic battles.

Following a brief pit stop, the mammoth journey continued back home through Portsmouth before ending in Guildford.

The group were aiming to complete the journey within 48 hours, with a journey's end party taking place in Jamie's Italian in Guildford.

The Two Boats Cycle has been organised to raise money for learning disability charity the Halo Project, which gives support to 16 to 35 year olds.

Fundraisers have already raised over £10,000 and have set themselves a target of £15,000.

Mr Hill, who is a patron of the charity said: "I’m not looking forward to this at all. But it’s for Halo, so I’ll be peddling like Chris Hoy, big thanks to everyone taking part. We love you."

Young’s finance director Peter Whitehead said: "We’re all keen cyclists but this ride is really going to test us.

"The Young’s team have all been training hard since the New Year though so we’re all fully prepared and itching to go. I just hope the French have a few beers ready to welcome us in Caen."
