Clergy from across Epsom and Ewell joined hundreds of worshippers on a procession of witness on Good Friday.
A cross was carried at the front of the parade along Epsom High Street, followed by a service in the market place.
The cross was raised in silence during the service while the congregation reflected on the story of Good Friday.
The cross remained in place until 3pm, when the scriptures say that Jesus died.
A tent was available for anyone who wished to talk or pray.
The welcome to the service was given by Paula Smith, chairwoman of Churches Together in Ewell, and the different parts of the service were led by the ministers of Churches Together in Epsom.
