A 37-year-old man has appeared in court charged with the murder of a man at the YMCA Croydon.

Daniel Bannister is charged with the murder of Rajendra Patel.

He spoke only to confirm his name, date of birth and address, at the brief hearing at Bromley Magistrates Court.

Wearing a grey jumper and white trousers, Mr Bannister told the court he had been staying at a shelter in Fontaine Road, Tottenham, for the last two weeks.

Mr Patel was assaulted at the Lansdowne Hostel in Lansdowne Road, on Tuesday, February 21.

The 48-year-old was taken to a south London hospital where he was treated for his injuries.

But Mr Patel returned to hospital on Thursday March 8, where he died the next day.

A post-mortem examination held at Croydon Mortuary on March 13, gave the cause of death as pulmonary thromboembolism, deep vein thrombosis of the left thermeral vein and a fracture to the left ankle.

Mr Bannister will appear at the Old Bailey for a bail hearing on March 20.
