A dog was pulled from a freezing lake in a dramatic rescue after it fell through ice.

Firefighters from Battersea fire station plucked the pooch from Battersea Park lake yesterday.

They had to smash through ice as they paddled in an inflatable dinghy to reach the distressed dog.

The dramatic rescue is shown in the video below.

It is understood the dog, a daschund, fell through the ice after rushing onto the partially frozen lake.

The Fire Rescue Unit quickly inflated a dinghy and set out on to the lake to rescue it.

A crowd that had formed to watch the rescue unfold cheered as two firefighters pulled the dog from the freezing waters.

A spokesman for Battersea fire station said: "We believe the dog was fine following the rescue, but obviously very cold."

It was reunited with its owners, who had been nervously watching from the side of the lake.

Yet another idiotic dog owner! Had the thing been kept on its lead (as required in the park) by its numptie owner(s), public money wouldn't have been wasted rescuing it!
It's time that these people were charged for the cost of the rescue, then they might learn how to look after their animals responsibly!

QPR4Me, do you know the dog was off it's lead? i've had a few dogs that were on leads but yanked so hard to go running that the lead was snapped out of my hand. or perhaps the collar wasn't fitted correctly and the dog slid out of it. that happens a lot with small dogs... so calm down with the anger and the name calling, ok? not necessary... be happy the lil' guy didn't freeze!

Thank you to everyone who helped Jimmy keep going as he held on to life. Every time you shouted his name his tail started wagging and he tried to stay afloat. We went to visit the Firemen and Police in the Park with a Thank you, box of Celebrations and a donation on Sunday. Jimmy is OK now but with a bad chest infection. He is extremely sorry and still in the Dog House at home. He hates water and pees inside the house when it rains. Water is his least favourite thing in the world but, like many other dogs, he doesn't know what ice is and chased the birds on to it. It was heart stopping for all of us, not least because my teenage son, Jack, whose dog Jimmy is, wanted to go onto the ice and rescue him. I want to truly Thank the man who helped me stop him going in. We are all deeply traumatised by what happened and very embarrassed. We owe the emergency services everything. They are amazing. I hope that the pond gets roped off in winter. Jimmy's Family

emelem,

I take it that you are going to apologise for your your defence of the fools that did not have the dog on a lead now! You quickly jumped in to defend a dog owner after I criticised it, without knowing that I spent my life with dogs from corgi sized up to Irish Wolfhounds! The owners of the stupid little "sausage dog" have now made a donation and have promised to keep their silly little thing on a leash!
Dogs are great things, sadly, most of their owners are clueless.
In the meantime, I will await your apology but don't expect to get it as your agenda doesn't seem to accept that dog owners can be stupid!
