Striker Paul Vines climbed off his sickbed to become super sub in his team’s FA Trophy win on Saturday – but admitted he’d rather have started.

The former Kingstonian forward came off the bench to fire home a late brace as Carshalton Athletic beat Bideford AFC 3-1 at Colston Avenue.

And Vines, who notched in the 83rd and 93rd minute, hopes his 20-minute goal-scoring cameo will be enough to start next time.

He said: “I had been ill on Thursday and was not feeling 100 per cent fit.

“But I always want to play. I give 110 per cent every time. It is just the way I am when it comes to football.

“But the decision is the manager’s.

“It is not a bad problem to have – competition for places.”

Fellow frontman Elliot Onochie bagged the equaliser for Carshalton after Matt Hockly put Bideford ahead from the penalty spot when Sonny Ayres fouled Kevin Squire.

The Robins face Cirencester Town in the next round and go to Concord Rangers in the league on Saturday.
