From installations on streetlamps, to chalk drawings at bus-stops, art has been popping up in the most unlikely places giving Streatham’s streets a facelift.

The Streatham Ninja Knitters, a group of young female artists, have been “knitting the town red, white and blue” with installations popping up over a few months.

One of the group said: “We wanted to do something that was fun and and would brighten up the dull winter days for the people who live around here.

“The Potters Lane underpass has really high traffic with people coming and going from Streatham Common station.

“I took my kids down to see the work the morning after we installed the art. There were crowds of people stroking the knitting and taking photos.”

Another anonymous group, Chalkers TM, have been scratching Streatham streets with chalk-shadow sketches for three years.

According to its website, one intention is to “give Monday morning workers an interesting walk to work”.

As well as street art, the borough’s artists seem to be taking inspiration from the area's architecture.

Artist Karen Tregaskin, part of a group called the Streatham Sketchers, has been showcasing her illustrations of attractive Streatham buildings, including those soon “set to face the wrecking ball”.

She said: “I thought I would try to find natural beauty in Streatham to draw, and the most beautiful thing Streatham has is its fantastic array of architecture.

“I got sick of people saying ‘Streatham High Street is so ugly’ – look up there’s beautiful buildings here."

Ms Tregaskin will be presenting some of her work at the Streatham Festival next month.
