Police will be at the spot where an elderly woman was killed by a lorry appealing for witnesses to come forward.

Maria da Assuncao Grijo, 73, a Streatham resident originally from Portugal, was waiting to cross the road when an MTS sewage truck turned from Streatham Vale in to Woodgate Drive, at 9.35am on Friday (April 8), trapping her underneath the back wheels, witnesses have said.

Officers from the Metropolitan Police Service's Road Death Investigation Unit will be at the junction of Woodgate Drive and Streatham Vale on Friday (April 15) from 9am speaking to motorists and members of the public to try to find out how the incident happened.

A bunch of white lillies was left during the weekend on the spot where Ms Grijo died.

An estate agent working at an office a nearby said he heard a passer by scream as Ms Grijo was knocked over by the lorry.

He said the driver appeared to be in shock after jumping off the lorry to check what had happened.

London Ambulance Service attended the scene, but the she was pronounced dead by the air ambulance doctor shortly after the incident.

Ms Grijo’s relatives have been informed and a post mortem took place on Tuesday (April 12) at Greenwich mortuary, giving the cause of death as multiple injuries.

The driver of the lorry - a 55-year-old man - was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. He has been bailed to return on a date in early June.

Detective Sergeant John Hartfree, leading the investigation, said: "I am appealing for anyone who was in the area around the time of the collision to come forward and speak to my officers.

“This area of Streatham would have been very busy at this time of the morning and I would urge anyone who saw anything, no matter how insignificant they may think it is, to contact us."
