BROMLEY police officers are warning people to be aware of hoax callers offering a council tax rebate.

Residents have been called by scammers offering them a refund on their council tax, due to their having lived at their address for many years without causing any trouble.

The caller then asks the potential victim to confirm their first name and date of birth and then tells them they are due a £7,000 government grant as reward for good behaviour.

People are also asked for bank details to enable the payment to be made directly.

Police say they have had no reports of anyone falling for it.

A Bromley police spokesman said: "Never-ever disclose your bank details to anyone cold calling.

“Banks will never call you asking for personal or account information as they already have these details and neither will the police.

“Sadly, every day people are conned into disclosing personal and financial information which is then used to obtain loans, goods and services fraudulently, generally over the internet.

“Should you receive a phone call asking you to disclose any personal or financial details, terminate the call immediately".
