Young and old green champions braved the waters of the River Wandle during a special clean-up event.

Eco-friendly volunteers and members of the Wandle Trust donned their waterproofs on Sunday to remove litter from the Lydden Road stretch of the river in King George’s Park.

In addition, the environmental charity has been tasked with providing data on the Wandle’s growing eel population. So, as well as keeping a note of all the rubbish collected, helpers also kept a tally of eels - how many were found and in what, for example tyres and mattresses.

The Wandle Trust, which is dedicated to restoring and maintaining the health of the south London river and its catchment, is continually working to remove any dumped rubbish from its waters.

It holds community river cleanups on the second Sunday of every month, rotating through the boroughs of Merton, Sutton and Wandsworth.
