Lives put at risk by dangerous fly-tipping incident in Claygate

Road users' lives were put at risk after builders' waste, believed to be contaminated with asbestos, was found dumped on Woodstock Lane South, during the night of August 25.

Rubbish including bricks, doors and scrap metal were left scattered across the Claygate country lane creating high levels of danger for unsuspecting drivers.

Elmbridge Council's environmental enforcement officers set up an operation with Surrey Police to remove the fly tipped waste from more than 100 metres of busy road.

The situation was deemed "a potentially deadly obstruction for passing motorists" and further action to close the road during a vigorous clean up took place.

Licensed contractors worked for more than an hour-and-a-half in the operation to remove the waste, with a final cost of about £1,000.

A council spokesman said: "Elmbridge Council enforcement officers are investigating the fly tip and will seek to prosecute if the reckless fly tipper is identified."

Local police and the council are appealing for anybody who may have any information on the incident or recognises any of the items photographed to come forward.
