Chaos due as part of Brighton Road is closed

7:30am Friday 3rd September 2010

The area around Brighton Road is set to be hit with traffic chaos with emergency works starting just as children go back to school.

From this Saturday the lanes running northbound on Brighton Road just south of Nottingham Road will be closed for ten days and the southbound lane will be reduced in size.

Traffic running through the junction is set to be controlled through four-way temporary traffic signals.

Workmen for the National Grid will be carrying out repairs to a cable which has developed a weak spot in the plastic sheath sparking fears it may start to leak oil into the ground.

A spokeswoman for the National Grid said: “We have a 400kv cable that runs underneath the road. The cable is cooled by oil that runs along the cable surrounded by a protective sheath.

“During a survey we have identified a fault in the cable, the sheath is weakening.

“The cable is out of service at the moment, before we put it back into service we have to repair the sheath.

“We start the work on Saturday morning and we expect it to take 10 days although we will make every effort to get it done sooner.”

Motorists are being advised to avoid the area and find an alternative route.
