David Miliband in Colliers Wood for Labour leadership bid

The man tipped to lead the Labour Party was grilled by hundreds of supporters and activists in Colliers Wood this week.

David Miliband, the former Foreign Secretary and frontrunner in the party’s leadership contest, took questions from a crowd of about 300 people at Singlegate Primary School on Tuesday at an evening hosted by Times journalist David Aaronovich.

Speaking to the Wimbledon Guardian later, he praised the Labour council’s commitment to education and called for the authority to work closely with Merton police to tackle crime in the borough.

During the 90-minute question and answer session he pledged to tackled educational inequality and defended his support for ID cards and the war in Afghanistan.

Mr Miliband also thanked local party members for their campaigning efforts earlier this year.

He said: “The truth is the membership and supporters of the Labour party saved us in May.”
