UPDATE: The London Tramlink between Reeves Corner and East Croydon has been suspended.

Buildings were evacuated in Church Street, Croydon, last night after a major fire destroyed a shop front and flats.

Firefighters spent more than seven hours tackling the blaze which totally gutted the Wing Tai Chinese supermarket below the flats and partially damaged the next three floors and the roof of the building.

Nineteen people were forced to leave the buildings nearby and two people were treated by ambulance crews for smoke inhalation.

Croydon Council set up a rest centre for the evacuees.

The fire brigade used five jets, aerial spotters and heat cameras to fight the fire.

What a stunning picture, your photographer deserves a medal for capturing that shot. It looks like he was up very early in the morning too, so maybe he should get two! Who says local newspapers aren't on the ball any more?
