Quadruple A217 smash causes traffic mayhem

Traffic was brought to a standstill this morning after a motorist was cut out of the wreckage by fire fighters following a four-car smash on the A217.

Two BMWs, one red and one silver, a black Renault people carrier and a van were involved in the incident, which took place in St Dunstan’s Hill, between the junctions with Cheam Road and Gander Green Lane at around 8am today.

The Renault is believed to have crashed into another car and then into a speed camera, knocking it out of the ground.

But some 45 minutes later, another crash happened in the same location, possibly, according to one eyewitness, because the drivers were “rubber-necking” at the first crash.

The silver BMW was left with a badly damaged front bumper and bonnet while the red BMW suffered severe damage on all four sides and the injured passenger had to be cut free.

Some passers-by were distraught after a child’s car seat was found in the middle of the dual carriageway but the London Fire Brigade confirmed there were no children involved in the smash.

St Dunstan’s Hill was closed off between Cheam Road and Gander Green Lane with long jams along both roads.

One woman was taken to St Helier Hospital but her injuries were not thought to be serious.

A spokesman for London Ambulance Service (LAS) confirmed three ambulance crews were dispatched to the A217 at 8am this morning and that three people were taken to St Helier Hospital.

This is not the first or last time that an accident is caused by speed camers. Just think, this would have never of happened had there not been a speed camera in that location. They appear to cause more injuries and have very little benefit on the community. A waste of tax payers money. To add injury to insult, the Council will no doubt be quick to replace the speed camera rather than invest in fixing our appauling roads.

how can you say the accident was caused by the speed camera? i drive down this part of road every day . on one side ot the road you have a entrance to a petrol station where people literally
stop dead on the dual carridgeway to turn in and oppisite is a turning where people have to stop on the carridge to wait for a opening to cross the other carridgeway so surely it would be worth making this a no turning right peice of road .
