A 38-year-old man has been sentenced to 15 weeks in prison for attacking a bus driver.

Alan Walker from Benhurst Gardens in Croydon attacked the driver of the 358 bus by spraying an unknown substance into his face on June 12 last year.

Walker stepped in front of the bus as it passed Eden Park Train station, Beckenham, forcing the driver to stop.

He then sprayed something into the driver’s face. The driver was immediately taken to hospital and the bus was taken out of service to clean the cab.

Walker was arrested charged with assaulting the bus driver and damaging the bus after investigating officers obtained CCTV images of the attack.

Chief Superintendent Joe Royle, Safer Transport Command said: "Thanks to the thorough investigation undertaken by the joint MPS/TfL Workplace Violence Unit this violent offender was caught and brought to justice for this unprovoked and senseless attack.

"If you commit any kind of criminal act on or around the bus network the Safer Transport Command will catch, arrest, and prosecute you whenever we can."

Siwan Hayward, Deputy Director of Community Safety, Enforcement and Policing said: "Walker's attack on one of our staff was vicious and unprovoked. Nobody should be made to feel fearful when they are working. This is why we take such incidents seriously and will work with the Safer Transport Command to try our very best to find the culprits of such attacks, always pushing for the strongest possible penalties."
