£59k Wallington benefits fraudster spared jail

A benefit fraudster from Wallington has escaped jail despite illegally claiming nearly £60,000 since 2003.

But Jane Amor, of Hurricane Road, will have to pay back at least £100 a month for the next 50 years to settle the debt.

The 37-year-old dinner lady appeared at Croydon Crown Court on Tuesday after pleading guilty to benefit fraud at a previous hearing.

Miss Amor racked up the amount between 2004 and 2009.

Judge John Anderson said: “I’m not going to send you to prison although this offence does cross the custody threshold. Understand this Miss Amor, you have come very close to prison.

“Had the circumstances been different I would have had no difficulty imposing a more serious punishment.

“I give you credit that this began as a legal claim until your co-habitee moved in but this was not a sophisticated operation, that is quite clear.

“I’m quite satisfied that the chances of you reoffending again are slim.”

The £59,000 figure quoted in court was a result of Miss Amor swindling £32,000 worth of income support, £21,000 in housing benefit and £6,000 in council tax.

Councillor Tim Crowley, Sutton Conservatives finance spokesman, said: "This woman has defrauded the hardworking Sutton taxpayer like a parasite for five years to the tune of nearly £60k.

“Paying back £100 a month will not cover the taxpayers' cash she has sucked from the public purse.

“I would have preferred a stiffer penalty to send out an unambiguous message to fraudsters and bogus benefit claimants: don't even think about it.

"Some estimations show it costs British households £100 per year each, with the total UK cost thought to be near the £3.5billion mark."

Chloe Barton, defending Miss Amor, said the case had a “huge and devastating impact” on her client.

She said: “Miss Amor is very sorry and says the main reason she loves working is to keep her out of the house.”

Miss Amor was handed a two-year supervision order and must complete 150 hours of unpaid community work.

But the judge decided that pursuing further court costs of £350 would be fruitless.

Councillor John Drage, executive member for resources at Sutton Council, said: “It is simply not acceptable for anyone to claim for benefits they are not entitled to as it takes away valuable resources from those who really need it.

"As this case shows, benefit cheats are caught and brought to justice.”

Sutton Council has a team dedicated to investigating benefit fraud and works closely with the local police.

Since April there have been 20 successful prosecutions locally resulting in the repayment of over £300,000 of public money.

If a member of the public has any suspicions about benefits being claimed fraudulently they should contact Sutton Council on 020 8770 5687.

Funny how anyone would believe this person didn't know exactly what she was doing and that she wasn't entitled to this money. Why show favouritism to her yet hassle those with kids who are near homelessness and/or not quickly rehousing homeless families. This money she stole would have gone to better causes with those who really needed it. So the message is: steal from the taxpayers and you won't do jailtime. I now a family who is about to lose their home due to struggles with having a child with cancer yet no one is helping them yet if you are a benefit cheat you will be pampered and given a house for life, even if you commit fraud.

I am a home owner and was made redundant-sadly the help I recieved was poor. The coucil didn't care, I bet there was alot I was entitled to yet didn't get-why? Because I come from a family who do not know how to play the system.
I know aload of people who are on the fiddle-and yes I have reported them, we all should! Yet years later, they are still at it!
The only way to get the message home that this is wrong is not only for the money to be paid back but lock them up for a while!

sadly the above comments are all too true & common. The message is clear - live off falsely claimed benefits & you will get a slapped wrist & time to pay... For people like me, who earn - wait for it - £17 a month too much to get any help, there is nothing! I am left to struggle bringing up children alone (I dont claim "single-parent benefit as why should anyone else pay for the fact my husband left?), working 60+ hours a week. If I stole £60k do you think they would let me off with a fine? I dont think so.
This really needs to be tackled properly now.. benefits were supposed to be the saviour of the poverty stricken.. a stop-gap whilst getting back on your feet.. I know people who have lived on them for years & think it is their right to do so. Seriously give me 10 minutes with the PM & I would sort out the benefits problem for this country!
I would ensure that working people got help too! Seriously, if you put in, why shouldnt you get something back when you need help?

This thief has not been fined at all! She stole £59,000 and now she's been told that she has to pay it back - over 50 years - interest free! This criminal has not been fined - she's been rewarded with an interest free loan!

How much would a bank or building society demand for loaning somebody honest £59K over 50 years? A lot more than the original £59K, that's for sure!

So what are we to make of Judge John Anderson's ruling? Crime does pay, each and every day, for the next 50 years!

How many people out there will be willing to have a criminal record, in exchange for a £59,000 interest free loan? Quite a few, I imagine, so the courts are going to be busy!
