Residents are being asked to get into the charitable Christmas spirit and take part in the Wimbledon Common Parkrun for charity.

The 5km event is due to take place on Saturday, December 19, and this year it is raising funds for children’s mobility charity Whizz-Kidz.

Each competitor is asked to donate £5 which will help Whizz-Kidz support young disabled people in the area through mobility equipment, skills training and work placements.

Charles Lawrie, from Parkrun, said runners will be treated to mulled wine and mince pies and competitors are encouraged to don Santa outfits or dress in red.

It is hoped a record turnout of over 200 runners will take part.

Ashley Westpfel from Whizz-Kidz said: “For some young people this will be their first Christmas where they can help dress the tree -using adapted powered wheelchairs that rise up; or whizz through winter leaves instead of being pushed around in heavy unsuitable chairs.

“We hope lots of people come down to Wimbledon Common and help give more young people the best present yet - independence.”
