One of just two doctor’s surgeries in Merton’s most deprived ward is to close.
Conditions at the Lavender Fields surgery are “not fit for the 21st Century,” according to Sutton and Merton NHS and its doctors will now move to another surgery in Colliers Wood.
The decision to accept the doctors’ proposal was made at a meeting of the NHS Sutton and Merton Board at the Nelson Hospital in Wimbledon last Thursday.
Neil Malcolm, from the Lavender Fields Residents and Tenant’s association, protested outside the hospital, saying “tenant’s voice not GP’s choice”. He also spoke at the meeting.
A spokesperson from NHS Sutton and Merton said the GPs currently rent the Lavender Fields surgery and so were unable to make neccessary changes.
He added: “The practice has carried out patient surveys, and the feedback from these supports moving to much better premises. It is important to stress that older and house-bound patients will not be affected by the move, as the GPs carry out house visits when needed.”
He said the current site breaches the disability discrimination act and pointed out there are three other GP practices within a distance of between 0.6 and 1.1 miles.
