A very ordinary Putney street made famous by the Mr Benn television show will pay homage to its most famous inhabitant on Saturday.

Children’s writer and illustrator, David McKee, lived in Festing Road in the l970s, where he created the inspirational Mr Benn cartoon character.

Mr Benn, who in the series leaves his street and visits a fancy dress shop, from where he is transported to other worlds and adventures, became a cult BBC show in the 1970s and 80s.

Present day (and real) inhabitants of Festing Road, named Festive Road in the cartoon, are re-laying a commemorative stone on Saturday, to mark the road’s literary heritage and its association with Mr Benn.

The £500 cost for replacing and engraving a pavement stone was met by subscriptions raised by the residents.

To mark the day residents are having a tea party, with some residents dressing-up in many of the costumes worn by Mr Benn including - diver, cook, caveman, hunter, clown, wizard, knight and gladiator.

Local resident Hugh Thompson, who lives in the house formerly occupied by Mr Benn’s creator David McKee, said: “To others it may be a very ordinary street, but we have raised money to plant our own trees and now we are doing this. If ordinary is being decent and friendly then we are very ordinary. As it happens there are quite a few Mr Benns living in the street today.”

David McKee, the creator of Mr Benn said: “I am really happy that the present occupants of Festing Road are doing this. Everyone used to say that Mr Benn was stoned, and now he really is.”
