Children as young as seven in Wandsworth could be offered careers guidance if a Government pilot succeeds.
The programme, which aims to broaden the horizons of children from deprived backgrounds, will be tried first in seven areas outside of London.
The scheme involves universities and firms visiting schools to give a taste of working and learning in adulthood.
It comes after an annual survey showed careers guidance for teenagers fell over the past 12 years.
Conducted by the Sutton Trust education charity, it showed the proportion who said they had formal career advice meetings fell from 85 per cent in 1997 to 55 per cent in 2008.
The current pilot is taking place in 38 primary schools in Bristol, Coventry, Gateshead, Manchester, Plymouth, Reading and York.
If the results are good, the scheme could be rolled out across the country.
