A Roehampton prostitute has been told she could face five years in jail if she enters exclusion zones in a renowned kerb crawling area near Tooting Bec Common.

Sarah Caldecott, who has several convictions for soliciting in the area, was given an antisocial behaviour order banning her from entering the zone for the next five years.

The 41-year-old - who has also been banned from loitering for the purposes of prostitution in areas around her home in Tangley Grove, Roehampton, following a hearing at South Western Magistrates’ Court on May 28 – could face up to five years in jail if she breaks the order.

A Wandsworth Council spokesman said the Asbo was the result of action by several authorities following residents’ complaints.

He said: “These efforts were led by the Bedford ward safer neighbourhood team (SNT), the council’s parks police service and the borough’s antisocial behaviour unit.

"Prostitutes and their clients were using people’s front gardens and leaving used condoms and other unsavoury debris.

“Many female residents also had to run the gauntlet of kerb crawling drivers while walking near their homes.”

Sergeant Jill Horsfall, of Wandsworth police’s Bedford Ward SNT, said: “Now she is the subject of an Asbo Sarah Caldecott should not be under any illusions about what will happen to her if she is spotted anywhere near Tooting Common or caught soliciting in Roehampton and West Putney.”

Prostitution on Tooting Common dates back to the Boer War when thousands of British Army troops camped on the common before deployment to South Africa.

Prostitution itself is not against the law, but it is an offence to loiter or solicit for the purposes of prostitution.
