Tributes left for Richmond boy killed on Kingston Bridge

The family and friends of a scooter rider killed in a collision with a bus on Saturday have left floral tributes near where he died on Kingston Bridge.

Named in tributes placed on the bridge as Daniel Izquierdo, 16, the teenager was riding towards Richmond at about 3.40pm when he hit a single decker 411 bus travelling in the opposite direction.

An air ambulance landed on the bridge but it was too late to save the teenager, whose family lived in Richmond, and he was pronounced dead at the scene, at about 4.20pm.

The bridge was closed for investigation until just after 9pm, sparking huge traffic delays in the area, as vehicles were forced to take long detours to find another river crossing.

One boat owner even resorted to ferrying people across the river for £1 a trip, according to witnesses.

• Do you know Daniel? Leave your tributes in the comments section below or phone the newsdesk on 020 8330 9546 or 020 8744 4261.

As the father of a 16YO lad, my very deepest sympathies to Daniel's family and friends for their tragic and premature loss.
Somehow, the details of how one scally boat owner was ferrying people across the river for a quid, seem rather inconsequential in the circumstances.

In the name of community spirit, let's see if he declares his earnings.

Everyone who has mentioned this bridge has mentioned the speed of the traffic. I don't understand why there isn't a divider between the two directions of traffic. At least something to high enough to prevent overtaking into the incoming bus lane. (Not suggesting this is what happened here).

I don't know why everyone is fussing about the boat. No-one's saying whether or not South West Trains waived the normal fare of £1.70 to get between Kingston and Hampton Wick stations, which, to my way of thinking, is the most obvious alternative route to take on foot when the A308 Kingston Bridge is out of service.

If South West Trains *were* charging, then the boat would have been cheaper.

Honestly, no-one's forcing anyone to cross the river. If you had wanted to get your car across, you'd have had to go to either Hampton Court or Richmond, but no-one's complaining about that. So I reckon we should cut the bloke with the boat a bit of slack. (Not that anyone knows who he is, mind.)

A guy lost his life on the bridge - isn't that rather more important?

i dont actually think there is a problem with the bridge.

i also dont think speed is the problem here. well speed shouldnt be an issue with a 50cc scooter that can only do 30mph.

Its bad luck for the kid. i had a moped at 16 and i know how it is out there. sometimes your able to pick yourself up, dust yourself off and learn from your mistakes. its a shame this kid wont be able to do the same.

RIP

Thoughts go out to the family of this young boy.

As for the boatowner cashing in, nobody knows this person, they may well not be in a situation to offer FREE rides on their boat. Ferrying people back & forth would not have come free for them. They was doing this out of good will. How many of you out there would of done the same thing? give them a brake!

It is very sad that this young guy lost his life through this accident and I would like to offer my condolences to his friends and family.

As someone who used the services of the guy operating the impromptu "ferry" , I don't think of it as cashing in at all. Lots of people would have been stuck on both sides of the river had he not demonstrated his entrepreneurship. Point of information: he charged £2.50 - not £1!

How tragic, traffic constantly speeds on this bridge yet it has no speed bumps, unlike the rest on Kingston.
Regarding the ferry man: he's been charging people £1 for a river crossing for years so I'm sure this was all in a days business for him. The guy has to eat, so I find it rather cynical and unpleasant to suggest that he was a random cashing in.
