Wandsworth Council is hoping to boost customer numbers in the borough’s post offices by letting them offer more services.

Freedom travel passes will be available from 2010, while residents will be able to pay their rent, council tax, business rates and other bills on swipe cards from April this year.

Wandsworth has lost half its post office branches over the past five years.

Deputy council leader Maurice Heaster said: “We cannot afford to suffer any more closures.

"When a post office is shut down it means less people visiting our shopping areas and local shops take a serious hit.

“The council is doing all it can to support high streets and shopping parades and the government needs to play its part by keeping these key businesses open.”
