A blind man who says he desperately needs a special computer to be able to work is stuck on benefits because no one will pay for it.

Dominic Haynes, of Alton Road, Roehampton, needs £5,000 for a new computer which will allow him to work from home.

But because he cannot afford it he is currently living on over £800 worth of benefits a month.

The 32-year-old, who is registered blind, longs to have a career in marketing, which he trained in at university.

But since graduating in 2005, he has been unable to work as he cannot raise the cash to pay for an audio computer that will enable him to do the job.

Mr Haynes said: “I’ve tried absolutely everything to get the money – personal loans, charities, the Department for Work and Pensions, but everyone’s turned me down.

“I don’t want to be on benefits.

"I don’t want to sit on my backside all day.

"I want to put something back into society, but I feel like I’ve exhausted every avenue.”

Putney and Roehampton MP Justine Greening said: “In 40 weeks the taxpayer will have spent as much on benefits as it would cost to provide Dominic with a new computer.

"He is an intelligent man with a great future ahead of him.

"He just needs help taking his first steps and we should be supporting him.”

A spokesman from the Department of Work and Pensions said: “We cannot comment on individual cases, however, we do understand the importance people place on living an independent lifestyle.

“If customers on disability benefits wish to make a move into employment we would encourage them to make contact with our disability employment advisers who would be happy to offer the help and advice they need.”
