Youngsters across the borough are being encouraged to take up an instrument as part of a new initiative by the council’s music department.

They can learn how to play a whole host of musical instruments including the clarinet, flute, violin and guitar and will also have the chance to take part in orchestras and choirs.

The workshops, which will take place after school time, will be provided at a number of schools in the area, and will offer kids subsidised music tuition, a free instrument in the first year and financial help to buy their own instrument if they wish to carry on playing.

It is available to all young people who attend state schools or live in the borough.

Councillor Andy Lillis, cabinet member for community and children’s services, said: “Many children would like to play an instrument but simply cannot afford to buy one. The council’s music service is here to help. Music helps to develop a child’s creativity and create a sense of achievement and self worth, so now might be the time to start learning.”
