Wandsworth Citizens Advice Bureaux (CAB) is extending its opening hours after seeing its work load more than double in the past year as the recession continues to bite.

The Roehampton Lane office will now open an extra five hours a week, which they predict will allow them to see an extra 1,166 clients until March 2010.

The government have pledged £10million to fund debt advice services across the country following a 125 per cent increase in redundancy enquiries, and more than 450 new cases involving mortgage arrears each day as more people lose their jobs, get further into debt or risk losing their homes.

Wandsworth CAB chief executive Olufemi Oluleye said: “This is a great vote of confidence in CAB advice and welcome recognition that we need additional support right now.

“As people on low and moderate incomes are struggling to make ends meet at a time of increasing uncertainty about the security of their jobs and incomes, access to reliable, high quality, free, independent advice has never been more vital.”
